How did you start?
I started very small. I had been set on starting a brand from a young age, I studied business, and so I had my mind open as such to an idea. I was incredibly interested in interiors as well as textiles and was struggling to find exceptional linens with exceptional design as well as artisan homeware. With a buying background, I knew how to source and started initially with a curated range – I had very limited funds and couldn’t develop my own product and also wanted to mitigate the risk.
Homeware was hugely behind other sectors like fashion in terms of innovation and design. Initially, I did everything myself – the website, fulfilment, bookkeeping, press and so forth. Now, the majority of products are designed and manufactured by myself and the team.
Where do you take inspiration from?
My main inspiration comes from museums as well as antiques or age-old fabrics or designs. I believe that if something from centuries ago feels current today, this is a good indication it will stand the test of time. I also analyse architectural details such as ceilings, for example, for inspiration – it could be details, patterns or colours on an antique dress.
What's your favourite product to date?
Oh, this is hard. I am very proud of Annabelle bed linen - it was a design and quality level that I had in mind since 2018 but I had to wait to build up enough capital as it was a much bigger buy. It also took a few sample rounds to get right. I also love our Amelia bath towels – they are exceptionally soft, and we always get incredible feedback – as well as the Eleanor crockery range. It’s hard to choose!
What are your future plans for Rebecca Udall?
Don’t get me started! I am incredibly ambitious and always full of ideas, often, actually too many. We are planning to expand into more homeware categories as well as deepening our current categories. I want us to be front of mind in terms of a luxury homeware brand. Every Sunday I prioritise my thoughts otherwise I would send the team bonkers…
What is your favourite room in your house and why?
If I have to pick one room, it has to be my bedroom. Nothing beats a cosy bedroom
Who are your favourite interior designers?
I have many. Todhunter Earle, Turner Pocock, Albion Nord, Salvesen Graham, Guy Goodfellow, Veere Grenney, Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, Rita Konig and Isabella Worsley, plus others, are all favourites… don’t make me choose!
My style ranges from classic contemporary to whimsical to more traditional, heritage design – you can have them all together but equally, it depends on where you live and the property’s style, as to what is best. I don’t, but if I had three houses, they would all be totally different in style but still ‘me’.
Do you have any advice for couples on setting up their wedding list?
Try not to be too practical but equally you want things you will use forever. The best gifts are ones that the purchaser is delighted to buy and the recipient will really adore and hopefully use forever. We all need a kitchen roll holder but it’s not the nicest gift to buy someone! Of course, I think linens and special tableware are brilliant pieces as they can be on the more luxurious side and are often pieces we don’t buy ourselves but last a very long time. Art is a brilliant wedding gift, too.
“Build a wedding gift list with a wide range of price points but don’t make it so large that you could look spoiled or indecisive! You want to build a wide edit and then refine it over 2-3 months, so you know there are pieces you both really love.”
What is it about the Wedding Present Company that stands out to you?
The Wedding Present Company team are very helpful, their Chelsea showroom is brilliant and the breadth of product is fantastic - it has a great balance of heritage brands as well as more independent, unusual brands... I think it’s great that you can also add products to your gift list that are not part of The Wedding Present Company's core range.
What do you like buying as wedding presents?
Definitely something not solely functional – I always think presents should have an element of fun but also be something that I know they will use or have forever. Art, a tablecloth, or something personal. I recently bought friends a hand-carved wooden board made from wood sourced from where they got married which I feel smug about!
When I am buying wedding gifts, I try to get something with a personal touch that is also not purely practical. Without a doubt wedding presents should be special – by this I mean functional, long-lasting, joyful, timeless and something that evokes happy memories for happy times – meals, sleep, bath times as well as moments around the home are perfect for this.
Which Rebecca Udall product makes the best wedding present?
Bed linen has to be up there – Annabelle, Porto and Evora are my favourites depending on the style of the couple. Rattan pieces are also universally loved by our customers and balance functionality and style well.
