Inside Sophie Breitmeyer’s Belgravia Studio: On Bespoke Rings, Heirlooms and a Wedding Gift List Experience of Her Own

Tucked into Belgravia, Elizabeth Street has a reputation for being one of London’s prettiest, its independent boutiques dressed in blooms and its bakeries with queues out the door. Halfway along, a grey-green shopfront with gold lettering marks Sophie Breitmeyer’s studio, jewellery laid out under glass inside. Sophie meets us at the door, welcoming us to her new studio where she creates bespoke fine jewellery for engagements, transformations and weddings, alongside a ready-to-wear collection that covers everything else in a jewellery wardrobe.

“At The Wedding Present Company and Sophie Breitmeyer, both our studios are a home away from home,” she says, “where we welcome our clients and hope to educate them and guide them into purchasing future heirlooms, both heirlooms in the jewellery sense and heirlooms for their homes.”

Her own path into jewellery started early. “I was always a creative child, and my family had some history within the industry,” she explains. “This led me to pursue a degree within jewellery design alongside manufacturing training.” She started the SB label in 2010, working as a freelance designer alongside it, before the studio became what it is today.

Ask her to describe the pieces she makes, and she points to the stunning jewellery on display. “Rather than adhering to fleeting fashion trends, my pieces focus on structural beauty, timeless longevity and playful colours,” she says. “I am inspired by Art Deco designs and antique silhouettes."

For a couple getting engaged this year and hoping for something bespoke, the timeline is shorter than most expect: six to eight weeks from that first sketch to a finished ring. Pinned to the wall nearby, one sketch shows the process end to end: pencil drawings of the ring from every angle, next to a hand-painted version in gold and sapphire blue. The nerves, Sophie says, don’t tend to show up during the design process at all. They arrive right at the end. “Collecting the finished item” is the moment couples feel it most, she says, the culmination of weeks of decisions landing in the box in front of them.

A few steps from the armchair, one of the display cabinets holds the current collection: rings arranged in tidy rows, a pendant catching the light. Sophie’s work involves as much conversation as craft. “We’re not here expecting our clients to come with technical knowledge,” she says, “but we’re here to guide them through the process and help them understand along the way.” She walks couples through the differences between gemstones, metals and how a ring will actually wear day to day, often with a loupe in hand and a tray of loose stones laid out to compare. Before anyone even sits down for that first conversation, Sophie asks couples to do a little groundwork beforehand. “We ask all our couples to provide some inspiration, an ideal timeline and a budget before their visit.”

The first engagement ring consultation happens here, in the Belgravia showroom, over a relaxed conversation about design and budget. On the rare occasion that a couple can't agree, Sophie’s approach is to find the overlap rather than pick a side. “This rarely happens, but when it does, we guide them into creating a ring that they will both love,” she says. “Where possible, we take the opportunity to impart a little of each individual in the ring.”

Beyond engagement and wedding rings, the Sophie Breitmeyer studio also offers services clients often don’t know to ask for. Annual servicing is one, particularly for engagement rings worn every day. Working with inherited pieces is another, and increasingly one of the busiest parts of the studio. “We specialise in breathing new life into old collections, remodelling fragile, inherited jewellery into contemporary, wearable designs,” Sophie says, showing us sketches of the bespoke pieces pinned along the wall.

I have some of my mother’s that she got when she was married, and hopefully my daughter Evie will inherit some of the ones we got on our wedding list.”

Outside, the light on Elizabeth Street has shifted, the bakery queue already a little shorter than it was an hour ago. Sophie is already glancing towards the cabinet, with the next consultation due any moment.
